NANOCOSMOS MXF BASED BROADCAST AND E-CINEMA SYSTEM SOFTWARE

References

Our MXF toolkit is successfully running worldwide in digital ingest and playout systems, such as at CBC, one of European's leading broadcast and television production companies, and Berlinale Film Festival and European Film Market, one of world's largest Film Festivals and Film Markets.

E-Cinema

For Digital and Electronic Cinema distribution and playout, 2 basic system architectures are existing. The industry standard DCP (Digital Cinema) is based on MXF file containers with JPEG2000 compressed movie content. A strong encryption system with a PKI infrastructure is protecting the streams. As the system is quite complex and not easy to handle, simple E-Cinema playout systems are being used, based on existing video playout solutions.

The E-Cinema solution is software system runs on conventional PC hardware and software to obtain a cost-effective, scalable and extensible platform installation for digital film operation.

The entire workflow including generation of file formats and encryption can be controlled by a simple system setup. Intel-based PC servers were chosen using 19 "rack format running Windows7. The ingest and play-out software based with the inserted nanocosmos codec components are based on the Microsoft DirectShow architecture. The hardware connection is via SDI and analog capture and playout devices.

Since each cinema requires separate image and audio due to the requirements and technology used in different cinemas. The digital projectors required a digital SDI signal and multi-channel audio sound an analog 6-channel audio with 6 audio cables.

Ingest / Encoding

Many different types of digital video tapes and storage devices are used in movie cameras and production workflows. To better handle this wide range of formats, content / footage can be digitized, compressed and stored encrypted in a common storage format. This is done with a ingest software that controls the capture hardware over SDI, e.g. Blackmagic Multibridge and DeckLink devices.

Video formats can be MPEG or H264 based. On digital production studios, Full HD 1920x1080 MPEG-2 I-Frame Only with high bitrates of 50 or 80 Mbit / s are commonly used. Audio is usually kept uncompressed (PCM) in 5.1-channel mode. During the recording, a live encryption mode can be used to protect the content within the MXF container with AES encryption in a file.

The movie data is then usually stored in a network storage (archive), from which the more purely file-based management takes place. In addition to the pure footage, additional information is collected (meta data, such as clip title, author, length) and kept in a separate container or data base (e.g. XML text based format).

Play-out

The play-out is also implemented with Windows software for DirectShow using the nanocosmos codecs. The movies will be copied encrypted removable hard drives, or iSCSI network in the cinemas on the local hard disk of the PC play-out. From there, with the help of the play-out software created playlists and play. Must be given to the number of different frame rates and special configurations for the films of the cinema regarding separate video and audio output (digital / analog)
